When she was 17, Maya was about to leave Pittsfield to study English at Boston University, dreaming of fulfilling her father Jairo’s hopes of becoming a writer. Maya’s mother Brenda met Jairo on a monthlong mission trip to Guatemala; however, Jairo was killed later that month after protesting the Guatemalan Civil War. After returning to the US, Brenda learned that she was pregnant. Maya grew up without her father and knew little about her Guatemalan family, except a few stories. The House in the Pines (2023), a debut novel by Ana Reyes, is a psychological thriller that incorporates elements of magical realism and fairy tales. The novel began as Reyes’s MFA thesis at Louisiana State University; Reyes was inspired by her experience with Klonopin withdrawal and the mixed messages she received from various doctors.

When I first heard about this story and saw the cover—I thought it might be a bit of a generic thriller. I wasn’t sure if I was in the mood for it, even with the endorsement of Reese’s Book Club. The House in the Pines is about a girl named Maya whose high school best friend, Aubrey, died mysteriously seven years ago.

The needles are bright green and grow in clusters of three. Monterey Pines are adapted to cope with the frequent forest fires of California. The heat of the wildfire opens their pine cones, spreading new seeds to help regrow the forest. They require a lot of water and usually only live about 5 years.
In the past (?) or maybe it’s the present (?) Maya borrows her Mom’s car and sneaks out to Frank’s cabin at night. But she finds the cabin in ruins and Frank camping there. Maya recalls (not sure if in the past or present) that her mom (Brenda) met her dad and his family on a church trip to Guatemala. Brenda and Jairo fell in love and she got pregnant, but then he died, shot by the Guatemalan army. In the past, Frank takes Maya to his house in the pines.
‘The House in the Pines’ Is Reese’s Book Club Pick
Unlike back in 1941, today’s cooks regularly prepare foods for campers who are vegan, gluten-free, and lactose-intolerant. Vanhoy ditched her Upper West Side apartment for a spacious North Carolina home last fall. Since she's mostly renovated small apartments, this is many followers' first time seeing her overhaul large spaces, like backyards and open-floor living rooms. But just like her 2014 post-grad apartment where she first started home designing, it's a journey many—including this writer—couldn't be more excited to follow. While this novel is a different genre than The House in the Pines, it novel touches on some of the same themes, while also providing plenty of material for your next book club discussion. In this dystopian near future, Americans are subject to laws which serve to ‘protect’ the country’s values from foreign influence.
In the present, Maya tracks down Steven, the administrator of a Facebook page in memory of Christina, the YouTube murder victim. One of the most interesting conversations in the novel is between Maya and her mother, discussing the manuscript and the idea that our souls have a “true home” elsewhere. One would rather read a book about Brenda and Maya and skip Frank and his house in the pines altogether. The House in the Pines is a debut novel by author Ana Reyes and the first pick of 2023 for Reese Witherspoon’s own book club. Like many of Reese’s Book Club picks, this novel explores challenging themes through the story of one female protagonist. Maya is a young woman working through an addiction and trying to find her way forward in life. But instead, she is drawn back into her own past when she learns that a women from her hometown died in the same peculiar manner as her best friend did years ago.
Maya tells Steven she thinks Frank had something to do with both Christina and Aubrey’s death. On the date with Frank, Maya blacks out and loses hours of time, coming to with dirt on her hands and knees. Okay, so Frank is a librarian and possible psychic murderer who hits on high school girls. Main character Maya has insomnia and wonders how to get more Klonopin, which she’s been addicted to since the death of her best friend seven years ago.
The only thing that changed was that other people believed her. Now Maya imagines she is with her father, who is typing his book. Steven says that Christina left him a note saying she was going to go live with Frank in his cabin. Googling in the present, Maya finds a woman named Ruby Garza, who died in Hood River (where Frank was from) ten years ago in a fire.
The species is easy to care for with minimal water requirements. They produce yellow flowers in the spring and come in 4 different subspecies adapted to different climates. When you think of California, beaches and celebrities are probably the first things that come to mind. Those unfamiliar with the landscape of the Golden State might assume that palms are the only trees they will see.
Did the book explain why Frank was able to kill Aubrey, who seemed a lot less susceptible? Dan can’t believe Frank was actually a psycho and that he didn’t believe Maya. Maya thinks the poem is about forgetting our heavenly soul.
The way the book was, it just came off to me as weird and confusing, not scary. As you can see, pine trees are not an uncommon sight in California. These 19 species are all well-adapted to the unique climate found in the state, and many serve as important food and habitat sources within the local ecosystem. If you’re looking to add native trees to your yard or landscaping in California, several of the pine trees on our list might work well for you.
However, he again manages to hypnotize her, this time with the intent to kill her. Remembering Jairo’s story helps Maya break the trance, giving Brenda enough time to interrupt and save Maya’s life. All the while, Maya has been recording her encounter with Frank on her phone, catching his confession to murder. In flashbacks, readers learn about the events leading up to Aubrey’s death in the past, and what transpired between Maya and Frank that same summer.
